North Texas Students Qualify for Scripps National Spelling Bee

A Coppell middle schooler and Plano elementary schooler won the Dallas Regional Spelling Bee and will compete in the national spelling bee in Washington D.C., according to a Dallas Morning News article which reports, 

 

“A middle school student from Coppell and an elementary school student from Plano will represent North and East Texas this summer in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.

 

Twenty-seven students from 20 different Texas counties in the area competed Saturday in downtown Dallas for two spots at the national spelling bee that will happen from May 28 to June 2. The Dallas Sports Commission held its 65th annual Golden Chick Dallas Regional Spelling Bee at Booker T. Washington High School as the qualifier.

 

Sriya Gomatam, a seventh grader from Coppell Middle School, and Faizan Zaki, a fifth grader from Skaggs Elementary School in Plano, outlasted their opponents, making it to the final word of the competition.”

 

Zak and Gomatam, went perfect and emerged victorious in the regional spelling bee held at Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas, according to a Fox 4 News article. They say, 

 

“A fifth grader from Plano and a seventh grader from Coppell will represent North Texas during the National Scripps Spelling Bee later this year.

 

Skaggs Elementary student Faizan Zaki and Coppell Middle School student Sriya Gomatam were perfect during the regional competition on Saturday at Booker T. Washington High School in Dallas.”

The two students who qualified for the national spelling bee will receive an all-expenses-paid trip, including flights from Southwest Airlines. All regional competitors were winners of their county and school spelling bees.
